Sean Doyle

General Counsel

John A. “Sean” Doyle, MCNC’s general counsel, protects the organization’s tax-exempt status, mitigates risk, and ensures compliance with federal and state regulations. He also advises the board of directors and executive team on governance, employment law, contracts, and fundraising.

Throughout his career, John has worked closely on matters of broadband, telecom, and data informatics on the state and federal level since the passage of the 1996 Telecommunication Act. His work has resulted in changes to federal policy governing access to health data and he has been cited by the Federal Communications Commission on several landmark telecom cases.

In addition to practicing law, Sean has coached and consulted on hope, resilience, and meaning for a broad range of individuals and groups, including law firms, federal appellate judges, foreign governments, the U.S. Army, Buddhist monks, and recovering addicts. Sean also taught positive psychology at North Carolina State University and wrote for Psychology Today for a decade. His book, “Mud and Dreams: Essays on falling more deeply in love with life,” is footnoted prose poetry about the challenges we all face as adults, and how we have everything we need in life for happiness, meaning, and connection.
