The North Carolina General Assembly originally chartered MCNC in 1980 to be a catalyst for technology-based economic development across the state — and that mission still drives our organization today. We deliver the broadband infrastructure that powers schools, job training, healthcare, and research so North Carolina employers and communities stay competitive on the national stage.

Our leadership team regularly engages with policymakers, industry leaders, and national forums to advocate for sustained investment in middle-mile networks, workforce development, and equitable access. MCNC also weighs in on the federal funding landscape, ensuring North Carolina’s anchor institutions have a strong, informed seat at the table.
HERO Project
Across the state, MCNC’s High-speed Economies for Rural Opportunity (HERO) project is bringing high-speed internet to underserved communities by removing geographic barriers to internet access. With the investment in 209 miles of new middle-mile fiber, the project will impact over 350,000 homes statewide.

MCNC, Roanoke Cooperative, and Fybe developed a scalable, community-driven model to accelerate the rollout of final-mile rural broadband; and bring advanced cybersecurity capabilities, NCREN, and Fybe’s affordable, high-speed internet service to rural and overlooked North Carolina communities.
NCShare
The North Carolina Shared Research & Education partnership between MCNC and a coalition of higher education institutions is creating a dedicated Science DMZ network architecture, a Compute as a Service software ecosystem, and a virtualized GPU as a Service platform to democratize access to high-performance cyberinfrastructure.
