The North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) provides a network for constituents to connect their end point sites to the nearest NCREN regional point-of-presence (RPoP). This is typically a Layer 2 metro-Ethernet service with circuits available at 10Mbps, 20Mbps, 50Mbps, 100Mbps, 250Mbps, 500Mbps, 1Gbps, and 2Gbps. This service is typically bundled with Internet Service.
Requirements of Service:
In order to receive service, you must be a public sector or non-profit organization, sign our subscription agreements and provide power and space for any required network equipment.
Specifically, NCREN serves K-12 schools, community colleges, public and private universities, non-profit hospitals, public health agencies and clinics, public safety agencies and other government entities.
Eligibility & Pricing:
MCNC typically contracts with 3rd party service providers to procure circuits to connect to NCREN. MCNC is able to obtain very attractive prices for the circuits. Each circuit is priced individually and requires the initiation of a service inquiry with the 3rd party service provider. MCNC will work with the service providers to respond with availability, target completion date, and any applicable one-time charges for construction.
If a constituent is located within a mile of the NCREN backbone, it may be possible to get a quote for a NCREN direct fiber connection to be provisioned to that site. Direct fiber connection quotes are impacted by distance, required right of ways, railroad crossings, and geological barriers. Unlike 3rd party MCNC managed connections, a direct fiber connection can be “lit” using MCNC CPE to manage and maintain it or it can be “dark” using the constituent’s CPE. Each regional point-of-presence (RPoP) will be available 99.95% of the time calculated on a monthly basis.
