GLRBI Milestones: Round 1

Aug. 17, 2009: MCNC applies for first round of BTOP funding - 3 days before deadline.

Jan. 20, 2010: MCNC receives $28.2 million in first round of broadband recovery funds ($11.7 million in matching funds including $7.7 million from MCNC Endowment.

March 25, 2010: MCNC applies for second round of BTOP funding - 1 day before deadline.

April 16, 2010: ONUG Communications wins first bid for engineering and design of Round 1 project.

Aug. 18, 2010: MCNC receives $75.75 million in second round of broadband recovery funds ($28.25 million in matching funds including $24 million from Golden LEAF Foundation and $300,000 from MCNC Endowment).

Sept. 8, 2010: CommScope selected to provide materials for Round 1.

Oct. 8, 2010: MCNC breaks ground on Round 1 during a ceremony at CommScope in Hickory.

Oct. 8, 2010: Fiber Technologies, Globe Communications, Comtech, Cisco Systems selected for construction, splicing, and equipment for Round 1.

January 2011: All North Carolina Community Colleges are connected to NCREN.

March 22, 2011: The first 100 miles of conduit is installed on Round 1.

July 1, 2011: Video services infrastructure on NCREN receives upgrade (Cisco Telepresence, HD, more)

Aug. 12, 2011: MCNC hosts a Statewide Virtual Groundbreaking Ceremony in four locations throughout the state to highlight the start of construction on Round 2.

Sept. 1, 2011: East Carolina University receives a 10gig upgrade to network services from Round 1.

Oct. 6, 2011: MCNC introduces new NCREN Community Portal online during Community Day.

November 2011: National Climatic Data Center in Asheville receives 10gig connection from Round 1.

Feb. 12, 2012: Vidant Medical Center is the first not-for-profit hospital connected to N.C. Telehealth Network on NCREN.

Feb. 15, 2012: MCNC recognized as a "Champion of Change" during White House ceremony.

April 27, 2012: Round 1 project is complete (construction is finalized and fiber is lit on new/acquired network).
