MCNC
MCNC is an independent, non-profit organization that employs advanced networking
technologies and systems to continuously improve learning and collaboration throughout North Carolina's K20 education community. The company was initially funded by the North Carolina State Government in 1980 as a catalyst for technology-based economic development. MCNC's rich history and technological expertise spans over a quarter of a century.
NCREN
The North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) is a highly reliable, cost-efficient network. NCREN is one of the nation's first and one of the world's leading statewide regional optical networks.
MCNC and NCREN
MCNC is the company and NCREN is the network, our flagship product.
MCNC is Connecting North Carolina's Future Today.
The Federal Identity Management Task Force, formed by MCNC community members, is working on the NCTrust pilot project based on open-source Shibboleth software and technical infrastructure provided by Internet2's InCommon Federation. NCTrust allows multiple organizations to authenticate to shared, web-based resources using their home institutions' existing identity management environments.
Xena Networks ApS, a pioneering developer of Ethernet test solutions, today announced general availability of its XenaCompact" GbE/10GbE test platform designed and priced to enable network and equipment test engineers to deploy Ethernet test infrastructure that is inexpensive, simple to manage and easy to scale in terms of test port count and test capabilities.
Beginning last August, MCNC staff began a community process of defining and focusing on goals and initiatives that would govern the organization’s work for the next 3-5 years. The process was extraordinary and collaborative. The NSOC, the MAC, the MCNC Board of Directors all became very engaged and gave thoughtful input that was reflected in the approved goals and initiatives. Little did we know the importance of this effort. The unprecedented economic downturn and market impact made the focus and clarity the exercise brought even more important.
The Strategic Plan will govern our work for the next 3-5 years. As you all well know, these documents are not static. Specific timelines, scorecards and plans for implementation will enliven these goals and initiatives. Initiative owners within the staff drive them to completion and they are informed by the expertise of the community.
In the near term, the staff led by Wendy Kuhn, Mark Johnson and John Killebrew will be driving accountability and progress plans related to the plan through the staff and the MCNC governance structure. This will include monthly updates on progress to the NSOC and quarterly updates to the MAC and MCNC Board of Directors.
We will also be calling on community members with expertise to help us with specific initiatives. These Community Experts will be asked to spend an hour or two a quarter working with the MCNC Initiative owner in an advisory capacity—helping define and implement the direction we take in meeting the initiative.
I want to thank everyone for their commitment to the MCNC and the NCREN community. We have made much progress in the last 2 years and your assistance has led us to accomplish many milestones. We have only begun to realize our value to the students and all citizens of North Carolina.
